Publications are received as a benefit of membership in the International Society of Limnology. Publications are triennial. Previous regulations (prior to 1983) were: payment in a year in which a congress is held and the subsequent year entitles members to the Proceedings (Verhandlungen). Payment in the third year of the triennium entitles members to the Communications (Mitteilungen). After 1983, members must be in good standing for all three years of a triennium in order to receive SIL publications.

Inland Waters

This peer-reviewed journal will be launched at the 2010 SIL Congress in Cape Town, South Africa with first publication in 2011. It replaces the Congress Proceedings. The journal is supported by the electronic submission and tracking system of the Freshwater Biological Association. Manuscripts will be published consecutively online (as accepted) and quarterly in paper format. Access to the electronic version is provided to all SIL members and subscribers.

All aspects of physical, chemical, and biological limnology across organizational levels from autecology to ecosystem studies are appropriate, as are papers on applied and regional limnology. The intent is to publish standard manuscripts of about 5,000 words (with appropriate tables and figures) and focal articles entitled “Research Briefs” (<2,500 words). Review of these short communications will be fast-tracked and posted online with open access to accelerate publication of emerging issues and novel findings and to promote scholarly exchange.

Congress Proceedings

Please note that the Proceedings have been discontinued as of the 30th Congress and are replaced by the peer-reviewed journal Inland Waters.

Lectures are published in full in the Proceedings (Verhandlungen Internationale Vereinigung für theoretische und angewandte Limnologie) in either English, French, or German. This compendium gives readers not only recent views on the major problems and controversies in limnology but also a comprehensive summary of much of the current research in the field of freshwater biology.

PLEASE NOTE: The Proceedings of a congress, now in large volumes of over 3,500 pages, appear approximately 18 months from the time of the meetings for the normal sequence of completion (editorial processing, typesetting, figure processing, proofing by authors, additional editorial proofing, collection of excess page charges, printing, collation, binding, and distribution by surface mail from Germany).
