Culture, traditions, and natural resources of Mexican lakes under the influence of anthropogenic pressures and climate change
By Javier Alcocer & Elva Escobar

📃This paper present how pre-Hispanic lacustrine Indigenous’ cultural knowledge and traditions persist in some location of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, thereby playing a key role in safeguarding water resources.

💡INSIGHTS:
(1) Central Mexico lakes on which Indigenous people depend on face numerous environmental pressures, including pollution, extensive water withdrawal and climate change.
(2) Coordinated efforts of Indigenous peoples, nongovernmental agencies, and nonprofit foundations supported by the knowledge provided by Mexican scientists help to safeguard water resources in areas where Indigenous peoples have water rights.

Socioenvironmental impacts of pine (Pinus taeda) monocultures established by forestry companies on Guaraní territories in the Province of Misiones, Argentina.
By Héctor A. Keller & Verónica L. Lozano

📃This paper summarizes the main impacts of the implementation of pine monocultures in Guaraní territories and communities.

💡INSIGHTS:
(1) The forest ecosystems implanted in Guaraní territories have a significant impact on the culture, traditional landscape, and biotic and abiotic resources on which they depend.
(2) The high diversity of the native forest in Misiones, as well as the climatic conditions, would allow a relatively rapid ecological restoration if urgent and long-term measures are taken. Fundamental to this process is the recognition of the knowledge and capacities of the Guaraní communities for environmental recovery and subsequent territorial development.
